A reimagining of the urban market typology, this proposal introduces a striking formal contrast to the dense Manhattan streetscape. Set within Roosevelt Park, the design centers on an expansive open plaza that draws the surrounding neighborhood inward, positioning the market not as a destination but as a catalyst for community life. A dramatic shed roof structure filters natural light across the market floor, extending the program's functionality year-round while sheltering an active mix of retail, dining, classrooms, and recreational space. Below grade, a basketball court preserves the site's existing amenities, visually connected to the market above while maintaining its own distinct character. The result is a layered civic hub that balances commerce, education, and recreation within a single cohesive framework. A permanent landmark that revitalizes Roosevelt Park and strengthens its role as a cultural and economic anchor for the Lower East Side.
