Located along the Brooklyn Marine Terminal at Valentino Pier, this proposal reimagines one of New York City's most vulnerable waterfront edges as a resilient civic campus rooted in Red Hook's working maritime identity. The project weaves together flood infrastructure, public landscape, and a purpose-built maker space into a unified intervention that strengthens the connection between community, industry, and the harbor. The centerpiece of the proposal is Flowline Hall, a large-span maritime workforce training facility whose form is drawn directly from the language of the shipyard. A wave-shaped facade rises from the reshaped shoreline, its undulating profile functioning simultaneously as an architectural gesture and a sun-shading system, casting graduated shadow across the building's south-facing glazing throughout the day. The structure's ship-like massing references the industrial heritage of the terminal while signaling a new civic purpose. Inside, the building is organized around a double-height atrium that serves as the social core of the campus, connecting multiple floors of workshop space, classrooms, and collaborative studios. The upper levels house large open-span training floors designed for hands-on maritime and fabrication work, supported by flexible classroom suites and seminar spaces that accommodate both vocational education and community programming. A ground-floor gallery opens directly to the public waterfront promenade, bringing the work happening inside the building into view and dissolving the boundary between the campus and the neighborhood. The surrounding landscape extends the program outward, reshaping the shoreline to promote water access and recreational activity while integrating a berm-based flood protection system that buffers the community from storm surge. Valentino Pier is reconceived not as an endpoint but as a threshold, a place where Red Hook's industrial past and resilient future meet at the water's edge.
